If you smell gas, don't use switches or the oven. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside. For smoke or a burning smell, turn the oven off and switch off the breaker.
Getting your kitchen cooking again
When the oven quits, dinner plans fall apart. We repair freestanding ranges, slide-in ranges and wall ovens in Land O' Lakes homes, both gas and electric. Since we're based here, local calls are near where our day begins. We offer same-day service when a spot is open.
Oven problems we fix
- No heat or slow preheat. A burned-out bake or broil element, or a weak gas igniter.
- Uneven baking. A failed convection fan, a bad temperature sensor or a door that doesn't seal.
- Too hot or not hot enough. A sensor or control that's out of range.
- Error codes or a blank display. A control board, keypad or wiring problem.
- Door trouble. Broken hinges, or a self-clean lock that won't release.
Gas or electric: what's different
Electric ovens heat with metal elements. You can often see a break or blister on a failed element. Gas ovens use an igniter that glows to light the burner. When an igniter gets weak, it may glow but never get hot enough to open the gas valve. That's why a gas oven can click or glow and still never heat.
We don't share gas repair steps for homeowners. Gas parts should only be handled by a trained tech.
New kitchens, older kitchens
Many newer ranges and wall ovens have touch panels and Wi-Fi features. Those are handy, but the electronics can be sensitive to storm surges. On older, simpler ranges, elements, switches and igniters are often the issue. We work on both kinds.
During storm season, UF/IFAS suggests surge protectors, or unplugging things you don't need, to help protect electronics. Most ranges plug in behind the unit, so a surge can reach the control board.
A few safe checks
Turn the oven off and switch off the breaker before you look at anything.
- Check the breaker panel. Electric ranges use a double breaker, and a half-tripped one can leave the cooktop working but the oven dead.
- Make sure the clock is set. Some ovens won't heat until the time is set after a power outage.
- See if the oven lock or Sabbath mode is turned on by mistake.
- Look for a visible break on an electric bake element.
Don't try to light a gas oven by hand, and don't take off the back panel.
When to repair and when to replace
Elements, igniters, sensors, door hinges and fans are usually good repairs. Higher-end ranges, such as Viking or Wolf, are almost always worth fixing. If an older, basic range needs a new control board and other major parts, replacing may make more sense. We give you an upfront quote first, and you decide.
