Smell gas? Don't use any switches or the cooktop. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
Four kinds of cooktops
Cooktops sit in the counter without an oven below. Each type heats in its own way.
- Gas: burners mix gas and air, and a spark igniter lights the flame.
- Electric coil: metal coils glow red when power runs through them.
- Smooth-top (radiant): heating elements sit under a glass-ceramic surface and warm the glass.
- Induction: a coil under the glass makes a magnetic field that heats the pan itself. The glass only warms from the pan.
Knowing which one you have helps us bring the right parts.
Common cooktop problems
- Gas burner will not light or keeps clicking. A wet or dirty igniter, burner caps sitting crooked, or a worn spark module.
- Coil element will not heat. A burnt-out coil, a scorched receptacle (the socket it plugs into), or a bad control switch.
- Smooth-top zone stays cold or will not turn off. A failed radiant element, a broken limiter, or a stuck switch or relay.
- Induction shows an error or will not detect the pan. The pan may not be magnetic, or there may be a fan, sensor or board problem.
- Cracked or chipped glass. Usually from a dropped pan or a sudden temperature change.
A word about cracked glass
We want to be straight with you. On smooth-top and induction cooktops, a crack usually means replacing the whole glass top. On many models the glass comes as one piece with the frame. That part can be a big share of the cost of a new cooktop.
Please stop using a cracked glass cooktop. Spills can reach the parts below. We will give you the repair price and an honest view of whether a new cooktop makes more sense.
Safe checks you can do
For electric and induction models, switch off the breaker before touching anything under or around the surface.
- Check that the control lock or child lock is not turned on.
- On gas, let the cooktop cool, then make sure each burner cap sits flat and level.
- On coil models, with power off, unplug the coil and plug it back in firmly.
- On induction, test with a pan a magnet sticks to.
- Check the breaker if nothing works at all.
Don't take apart gas parts. That work belongs to a trained technician.
When our technician arrives
We tell you the visit price on the phone before we come. We test the elements, switches, igniters and control boards, and check gas ignition on gas models. You get an upfront quote before any work, and our repairs come with a warranty.
Repair or replace?
Igniters, coils, switches and single elements are often worth fixing. A cracked top, or a board failure on an older induction unit, may tip the balance toward replacing. We lay out both options and let you decide.
Florida angle
Power outages and surges are common in storm season. Plugging sensitive electronics into surge protection, or unplugging them, is a step UF/IFAS advises. Induction and touch-control cooktops have sensitive boards. If yours shows codes or won't respond after a storm, call us.
Brands we see
We repair cooktops from GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Bosch and Maytag, plus Wolf and Viking. Learn more on our Bosch and Viking pages.
