If you smell gas, don't touch switches or the cooktop. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside.

Which kind of cooktop do you have?
Gas. Each burner has an igniter (the part that clicks) and a valve. Most gas problems come from wet or dirty igniters, a cracked igniter, a bad spark module or a clogged burner port.
Electric coil. Coils plug into a socket. A burned socket, a bad coil or a failed control switch can leave one burner cold or stuck on high.
Smooth-top glass. The heating parts sit under the glass. Elements, limit switches and touch controls are the usual repairs. Cracked glass needs a new top, not a patch.
Induction. These heat the pan with a magnetic field. They have more electronics, so faults are often in the control or power board.
Common complaints we hear
- A gas burner clicks nonstop, or won't click at all.
- The flame is uneven, yellow or lifts off the burner.
- An electric element won't heat, or only heats on high.
- The glass top shows an error or the touch panel won't respond.
- An induction zone doesn't sense the pan.
Spills, humidity and the clicking burner
Boil-overs are a common cause of gas igniter trouble. Water and food sit around the igniter and short it out. Our humid kitchens can make a damp burner take longer to dry. If a burner keeps clicking after you wipe up a spill, let it dry fully before you use it again.
Simple checks you can do
Turn off the burners, and switch off the breaker for an electric or induction cooktop before you look.
- Make sure the burner caps sit flat and are lined up right.
- Clean dried food from around the igniter with a dry brush.
- For a coil top, see if the coil is pushed fully into its socket.
- For induction, make sure your pan is magnetic. A fridge magnet should stick to its bottom.
Never take apart gas valves or gas lines. Leave that to us.
Newer kitchens, more electronics
Many newer cooktops are glass or induction models with touch controls. These are easy to clean but more sensitive to surges. UF/IFAS suggests surge protectors, or unplugging what you don't need during storms. On older gas and coil tops, switches, sockets and igniters are the usual fix.
Repair or replace?
Igniters, spark modules, coil sockets, switches and single elements are usually worth repairing. A cracked glass top on an older, basic cooktop may cost close to a new one. Premium gas cooktops from Wolf or Viking are typically worth a repair. We give an upfront quote, and you approve it before work begins. We tell you the visit price on the phone before we come.
