What a dishwasher actually does
A dishwasher fills with a small amount of water, heats it, and sprays it through spinning arms. A filter catches food bits. Then a drain pump sends the dirty water out, usually through the sink drain or the garbage disposal. A heater helps with drying at the end.
Because it shares a drain with your sink, a dishwasher problem is sometimes really a plumbing problem.
Common dishwasher troubles
- Water left in the bottom. A clogged filter, a blocked drain hose, a failed drain pump, or a new disposal with its knockout plug (a small plastic disc) still in place.
- Dishes come out dirty. Clogged spray arms, a dirty filter, weak water flow from the inlet valve, or a worn wash motor.
- Leaks onto the floor. A worn door gasket, a loose hose connection, or a cracked part under the tub.
- Will not start. A door latch that does not catch, a tripped breaker, or a control problem.
- Dishes stay wet. A failed heating element or rinse aid running out.
Safe things to check
Switch off power at the breaker before reaching under the dishwasher or into the drain area.
- Pull out the bottom rack and clean the filter. Many models have a twist-out filter.
- Spin each spray arm by hand. Clear any holes blocked by food or seeds.
- Run the kitchen sink. If the sink drains slowly, the dishwasher will too.
- If you just installed a new disposal, the knockout plug may still be in. Bosch lists this as one cause of its E24 drain code.
- Make sure the hot water valve under the sink is open.
What happens during our visit
We tell you the visit price on the phone before we come. We run a short cycle, read any error code, and check the drain path, pump, inlet valve and heater. Then we explain the problem in plain words.
You approve an upfront quote before any work starts, and our repairs carry a warranty.
Worth fixing?
Pumps, inlet valves, door latches, gaskets and heating elements are common repairs. They often make a dishwasher work like normal again.
Replacing may make more sense if the inner tub is cracked or rusted through, or if the unit is old and has several problems at once. We give you the facts so you can choose.
Water quality and Florida weather
Much of the water here comes from the Floridan Aquifer. Over time, minerals can leave a white film on dishes and scale inside the machine. Rinse aid and an occasional cleaning cycle help. Homes on private wells can see sediment reach the inlet valve screen, which can slow filling.
After a storm-related outage, a dishwasher may stop mid-cycle with water inside. Usually a reset once power is steady clears it. If you see a code or it won't drain, give us a call.
Brands we service
We repair Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung and LG dishwashers. We also service Viking units. Read our Bosch and KitchenAid pages for codes those brands use.
KitchenAid dishwashers flash codes as a pair, an F number and then an E number. For example, KitchenAid lists F9E1 as a long drain and F8E4 as water in the drip tray. Count the flashes or snap a photo of the display before you call. It saves time at the visit.
