When the dishwasher stops pulling its weight
A broken dishwasher sends you back to the sink, and that gets old fast. We repair dishwashers throughout Lutz. Some are hidden behind cabinet panels in newer kitchens. Others have served a family for many years in an older home. Either way, we find the cause and give you an upfront quote.
The usual suspects
- Standing water left in the bottom after a cycle.
- Dishes still dirty or coated with a gritty film.
- Leaks onto the floor near the door.
- Not starting, or stopping partway through.
- Dishes still wet at the end of the cycle.
Panel-ready and quiet models
If your kitchen has a panel-ready or built-in unit, the front is covered by a wood panel that matches the cabinets. These units are often very quiet, so you may not notice a problem until a cycle fails.
Bosch ties an E24 code on its dishwashers to a drain problem, often from a blocked filter, a kinked hose, or a knockout plug left in a newly installed disposal. An E15 code means water has been found in the base of the unit. See our Bosch appliance repair page for more.
KitchenAid models flash codes too. F9E1 points to a long drain, and F8E4 means water in the drip tray.
Hard-working dishwashers, wells and older homes
If your home is on a private well, sediment can clog the screen on the dishwasher's water valve. When that happens, the dishwasher may not fill well, and dishes come out dirty. For houses on county water, mineral deposits are the bigger worry. Aquifer-sourced water can leave scale on spray arms and heating parts as the years go by.
Florida health officials want well owners to test for bacteria and nitrate every year. That rule is about safe drinking water, but it is also a good nudge to check how your well is doing overall.
Two checks that solve a lot
First, pull out and rinse the filter in the bottom of the tub. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons for poor cleaning and standing water. Second, make sure nothing blocks the spray arms from turning, like a tall pan or a utensil that fell through. Always turn the dishwasher off at the switch or breaker before reaching inside.
If you just had a new garbage disposal put in and the dishwasher stopped draining, the knockout plug may still be in place.
Keep it, or start fresh?
A pump, door latch, inlet valve or float switch is usually worth replacing. A panel-ready dishwasher is often worth the repair, since a new one has to fit and match your cabinets. If the tub itself is rusted through or cracked, replacement is usually the better choice. We will give you a clear quote either way.
