Signs it's time to call a pro

Long vents, hot garages and your dryer
If your laundry is out in the garage, it gets very hot there in summer. A dryer working in that heat, with a long or crushed vent run, has to work harder on every load. Lint that builds up in the vent is a fire risk, and it is a common cause of slow drying.
Homes with the laundry room upstairs or in the middle of the house often have long vent runs. The vent may travel to the roof or an outside wall. Those runs need cleaning too, even if you cannot see them.
Gas or electric, we fix both
Electric dryers use a heating element, a coil that glows hot. Gas dryers use a burner and an igniter. Both use safety parts called thermal fuses that cut the heat if the dryer gets too hot. A blown thermal fuse is a warning sign, often caused by a blocked vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent just means it blows again.
If you have a gas dryer and smell gas, do not use any switches. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside. Never try to work on a gas line yourself.
What you can safely check
- Clean the lint screen before every load.
- Make sure the dryer is plugged in and the breaker is on.
- Check that the door closes firmly. Most dryers will not run with the door open.
- Go outside and look at the vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel air coming out.
If the air is weak, the vent may be clogged. That needs a cleaning before anything else.
