Smell gas? Don't use switches or the cooktop. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
Burner won't light? Start here
A dead burner is a small problem until you need it for dinner. We repair cooktops all over Lutz, from big island units to the stovetop on an older freestanding range. This page covers the cooking surface. If your oven has trouble too, our Lutz oven and range repair page has you covered.
Three types of cooktops, three sets of problems
Gas cooktops use an igniter that sparks to light the flame. Electric cooktops use coils or radiant elements under smooth glass. Induction cooktops heat the pan directly with a magnetic field, so the glass stays cooler. Each type breaks in its own way, and we work on all three.
Common cooktop problems
- A gas burner clicks but won't light, or the clicking won't stop.
- A flame that is weak, yellow or uneven.
- An electric element that stays cold or will not turn off.
- Cracked or chipped glass on a smooth top.
- An induction zone that won't detect the pan or shows an error.
Humidity, boil-overs and igniters
Moisture is a common enemy of gas igniters. A pot that boils over can soak the igniter, and it may keep clicking until it dries. In a humid place like Lutz, it can take longer to dry out. Clean the burner cap and base, and let it air-dry before you try again. If clicking goes on after it is fully dry, a switch or the spark module (the part that sends the spark) may need replacing.
Always make sure the burner cap sits flat and in the right place. A cap that is off by a little can cause an uneven or weak flame.
Island and pro-style cooktops
If your kitchen has a built-in cooktop set into an island, it may be induction or a pro-style gas unit from brands like Wolf, Viking, KitchenAid, Bosch or GE. These are built to last, and they are usually worth repairing. Removing one from a stone countertop takes care, and we take it slow.
Older ranges and simpler stovetops
If your cooktop is part of an older freestanding range with coil burners, repairs tend to be simple. A coil that won't heat may just need a new element or receptacle (the socket it plugs into). These are quick, simple fixes.
Safe checks before you call
- For electric and induction models, make sure the breaker is on.
- Check that the cooktop is not in a lock mode.
- For induction, use a pan a magnet sticks to. Many aluminum or glass pans will not work.
- For gas models, make sure the burner caps are seated and dry.
Never take apart gas parts yourself. If you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
Cracked glass: repair or replace?
A crack in a smooth glass top is a safety issue, so stop using that cooktop. Often the glass top can be replaced on its own. On an older, low-cost unit, a new cooktop may be the better choice. Igniters, switches, elements and control boards are usually worth fixing. We give you an upfront quote and let you choose.
