If you smell gas, don't turn on lights or the cooktop. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
Cooktops in Odessa kitchens
Odessa has a wide mix of kitchens. You may have a coil-top electric range, a smooth glass or induction cooktop, or a separate gas cooktop built into an island. If you have a pro-style unit such as Wolf or Viking, we repair those too.
Each kind fails in its own way, so it helps to know which one you have when you call.
Gas cooktops
What goes wrong: A burner won't light, or it clicks without lighting. Flames may be weak, uneven or yellow. Or the igniters keep clicking after the burner is lit.
Why: Food and boil-overs clog the small burner ports. Moisture gets into the spark igniter area. Spark switches and the spark module wear out. In our humid air, a damp cooktop can be part of the clicking story.
What you can check: Make sure the burner cap is seated flat and centered. Let a wet burner dry fully. Clean the cap with a soft brush. Don't take apart gas parts or the gas valve.
Electric coil and glass cooktops
What goes wrong: One element won't heat, or it only heats on high. Glass tops can crack or show a dark spot.
Why: Elements burn out. Infinite switches, the knobs' control parts, fail and stick on high or off. Loose or burned wire connections are also common.
What you can check: Switch off the breaker first. On coil tops, swap a dead coil into a working spot of the same size. If it heats there, the coil is bad. If not, the switch or wiring may be the cause.
Induction cooktops
What goes wrong: The cooktop won't detect a pan, shows an error, or shuts off during cooking.
Why: Induction needs magnetic cookware. Beyond that, cooling fans, sensors and power boards can fail. These units have a lot of electronics, so storm surges can hurt them.
What you can check: Test a pan with a magnet. If the magnet sticks, the pan should work. Make sure the cooling vents aren't blocked by a drawer or clutter.
Daily habits that help in a damp kitchen
Florida kitchens hold on to moisture, and a cooktop sits right in the steam from pots and the sink. Wipe spills once the surface cools, so liquid can't seep under burner caps or into knob openings. Run the range hood fan while you cook to move steam out. On glass tops, use a cleaner made for glass, and skip rough pads that leave scratches.
Storm season reminder
After an outage, a surge can damage glass-top and induction controls. UF/IFAS suggests surge protectors or unplugging items you don't need during storms. A cooktop that won't wake up after power returns should be checked before you keep trying it.
Repair or replace?
A single burner, switch or igniter is usually a sensible repair. Built-in gas cooktops from Wolf, Viking or KitchenAid are generally worth fixing. A cracked glass top on an older, basic cooktop may cost close to a new one, and we'll tell you if that's the case. You'll always see the quote before work begins.
