Never put your hand inside a disposal. Switch it off at the wall and at the breaker before checking anything.
The disposal: small motor, big job
A garbage disposal is a small motor that spins a plate under your sink. It grinds food so it can wash down the drain. Most of the time it just works. When it doesn't, the kitchen sink backs up, and the dishwasher may not drain either.
We fix disposals across Odessa, from newer kitchens in Starkey Ranch to older ranch homes off SR 54.
Is your disposal doing one of these?
- It hums but doesn't spin. Something is jammed, or the motor is stuck.
- It does nothing at all. The reset button tripped, or there's a power issue.
- It leaks. Water drips from the sink flange, the side hose or the bottom of the unit.
- It drains slowly or backs up. A clog in the disposal or the pipe below it.
- It's loud or grinding. Something hard is inside, or the parts are worn.
Safe things to try
First, turn off power at the wall switch and the breaker. Never put your hand in the disposal.
- Press the reset button. It's a small red or black button on the bottom of the unit. Wait a few minutes for the motor to cool first.
- Free a jam from below. Many disposals have a hex socket in the center of the bottom. Turn it back and forth with the small wrench that came with it.
- Look with a flashlight for a spoon, bottle cap or bone. Remove it with tongs, not your fingers.
- Turn the breaker back on, check it hasn't tripped, then try the switch with the sink clear.
If it still won't run, or if it leaks, it's time to call us.
Odessa homes and disposals
A few local details are worth knowing:
Well water and grit. If your home is on a private well, sediment can settle in drains and traps. It's not usually the disposal's fault, but it can add to slow drains.
Septic systems. If your home uses a septic tank instead of a sewer line, ask your septic pro about disposal use, since food waste adds solids to the tank.
Dishwasher link. In most kitchens, the dishwasher drains through the disposal. If your dishwasher won't drain after a new disposal goes in, the knockout plug inside the disposal's inlet may not have been removed. Bosch lists this as one cause of its E24 drain code.
Kitchen humidity. Under-sink cabinets can stay damp in our humid climate. A slow drip from a disposal can go unnoticed for weeks. Check under your sink now and then.
What not to put down the drain
Grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, rice and stringy peels like celery are the usual troublemakers. Run cold water while the disposal grinds and for a few seconds after.
Repair or replace?
A jam, a tripped reset or a loose drain connection is a simple fix. A disposal that leaks from the body of the unit usually has a cracked housing, and those generally need replacing. If the motor is burned out on an older unit, replacing it is often the smarter move. We'll explain your options and give you the price up front.
