No ice? Start with the water
An ice maker is mostly a small water system. Water flows through a thin supply line, past a valve and a filter, into a tray where it freezes. When ice stops, the cause is very often somewhere along that water path.
A few local conditions can add to ice maker problems.
Well-water homes. If your home is on a private well, sediment can clog the fridge's water filter or the small screen in the inlet valve. That slows the water to a trickle, and you get small, hollow cubes or none at all.
Mineral scale. Much of the area's tap water comes from the Floridan Aquifer. Minerals can build up in the valve and fill tube over time.
Garage and outdoor units. If your fridge or freezer is in the garage, or you have a freestanding ice maker on a lanai or by the pool, it can struggle to keep up in summer heat, and the water lines are more exposed.
Common ice maker problems
- No ice at all, even though the freezer is cold.
- Small, thin or hollow cubes.
- Ice clumped into one big block.
- Water leaking into the freezer or onto the floor.
- Bad-tasting or cloudy ice.
What to check first
- Is the ice maker turned on? Look for a switch, a wire arm that's raised, or a setting on the display.
- Is the freezer cold enough? It should be at 0 °F or below, the same mark the USDA uses for food safety.
- When did you last change the filter? A clogged filter is one of the easiest fixes. In well homes, filters may clog sooner.
- Is the water valve open? Check the shutoff behind the fridge or under the sink.
- Is the line kinked? Pull the fridge out gently and look. Unplug it first.
On Samsung fridges, a 33E code points to the ice pipe heater. That one needs a repair visit.
After a power outage
Storms knock out power, and ice makers don't like it. When the power is off, ice can melt and refreeze into a solid block. When power returns, throw out that first batch of ice and let the unit make fresh. If the ice maker doesn't restart, or the fridge shows an error after the outage, give us a call.
Keeping ice clean and steady
Change the water filter on the schedule in your owner's manual, or sooner if your home is on a well. Empty the ice bin now and then, since cubes that sit for weeks can pick up odors. If you go away for a long trip, turn the ice maker off so it doesn't run when no one is home to notice a leak.
Should you fix it or skip it?
Inlet valves, ice maker modules, fill tube heaters and water lines are common, fairly simple repairs. If the ice maker is built into a fridge that's otherwise in good shape, repair usually makes sense. For freestanding units, it depends on the age and the part.
