If you smell burning or see smoke from the back of your fridge, unplug it or switch off the breaker and call us.
Why Odessa fridges work so hard
Odessa sits among lakes, ranch land and newer neighborhoods. Each of those settings puts its own strain on a refrigerator.
Homes near the water deal with damp, heavy air for much of the year. Whirlpool explains that humid room air causes moisture to build inside a fridge, mainly when the doors are opened often. A little sweat on the outside is normal in humid weather. Beads of water, frost on the back wall or a wet floor point to a problem, often a worn door seal.
Then there's the garage fridge. If your fridge or freezer is in the garage, it runs almost nonstop in a closed garage in July. Fans, compressors and start parts wear out faster under that load.
Signs your refrigerator needs a pro
These are the calls we get most often:
- The fresh food side is warm, but the freezer still feels cold.
- The fridge runs all the time, or clicks on and off over and over.
- Water pools under the crisper drawers or on the floor.
- Frost builds up on the back wall of the freezer.
- The fridge is louder than usual, with buzzing, grinding or rattling.
Safe checks before you call
Unplug the fridge or switch off the breaker before you touch anything behind it. Then try these:
- Make sure it has power. Check the outlet and look for a tripped breaker.
- Look at the temperature setting. Kids and cleaning can bump the dial.
- Close the doors firmly and check that nothing is blocking them.
- Run a dollar bill along the door seal. If it slides out easily, the seal may be leaking cold air.
- On a Samsung model, an "OF OF" display means demo mode is on. Samsung says no service is needed for that one.
If these don't help, call us at 727-241-7777. Please don't try to add refrigerant yourself. That work needs a trained tech and the right tools.
After a storm or outage
Hurricane season can leave Odessa homes without power for a while. The USDA says to keep the fridge at 40 °F or below and the freezer at 0 °F or below. With the door shut, a fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer lasts about 2 days, and a half-full one about 1 day. Keep a fridge thermometer inside so you know for sure.
When power comes back, a surge can hurt the control board. UF/IFAS suggests surge protectors, or unplugging items you don't need during a storm. If your fridge won't restart, or a Samsung shows "88 88" after an outage, give us a call.
Repair or replace?
In general, repair makes sense when the fridge is fairly young, the cabinet is in good shape, and the problem is one part, such as a fan, a sensor or a seal. Built-in models like Sub-Zero are usually worth fixing. Replacing may make more sense if the fridge is old, has needed many repairs, or has a sealed system problem on a basic model. We'll give you an honest view and an upfront quote, so you can choose.
