Why fridges work so hard in Land O' Lakes
Your refrigerator fights the heat all year here. Kitchens in Land O' Lakes stay warm and damp for months, and that extra moisture has to go somewhere. Whirlpool notes that humid room air makes moisture build up inside, especially when the doors open often. It also says a poor door seal can let humidity form.
So a fridge that was fine in winter can start to sweat, frost up or run nonstop in July. Busy family kitchens see a lot of door openings, and humid air comes in each time. Either way, the cooling system has less room for error.
Problems we fix most often
- Fridge warm, freezer cold. Often a frosted coil, a failed defrost part or a fan that stopped.
- Water on the floor. Usually a clogged defrost drain or a leaking water line to the door or ice maker.
- Sweat or frost around the doors. Worn gaskets, a door that doesn't close fully, or a failed anti-sweat heater.
- Clicking, buzzing or a fridge that never shuts off. Fan motors, dirty condenser coils or a starting part on the compressor (the pump that moves the cooling gas).
- Display codes or a dead control panel, often after a power blip.
Refrigerant work (the sealed cooling system) is never a DIY job. If your fridge needs it, we'll tell you plainly before anything starts.
Safe checks before you call
Unplug the fridge or switch off the breaker before you touch anything behind it. Then try these:
- Make sure it has power and the breaker hasn't tripped.
- Check that the doors close all the way and nothing inside is blocking them.
- Look at the temperature setting. Kids and guests bump dials more than you'd think.
- If you have a Samsung that shows "OF OF", Samsung says that is Cooling Off or Demo mode and service is not required.
If none of that helps, give us a call.
After a hurricane or summer outage
Power losses are part of life in Pasco County. USDA says a closed fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds for about 2 days, and a half-full one for about 1 day. Keep an appliance thermometer inside: the fridge should be 40 degrees F or lower, and the freezer 0 degrees F or lower.
Some fridges don't restart cleanly after a surge. Samsung lists an "88 88" code that can show up when power drops during bootup. UF/IFAS suggests surge protectors, or unplugging things you don't need, to help protect electronics during storms.
Repair or replace?
A sealed, working cabinet with a bad fan, gasket, thermostat or defrost part is usually worth fixing. Built-in units like Sub-Zero are almost always worth a repair look. If the compressor has failed on an older, basic model, replacing may make more sense. We give you an upfront quote, and you decide. Nothing starts until you approve it.
