Ice matters here
In Land O' Lakes, ice isn't a luxury for much of the year. Coolers for the lake, cold drinks after yard work and kids home for summer all burn through it. When the ice maker stops, you notice fast. We're based in Land O' Lakes, and we offer same-day service when our schedule allows.
How ice makers usually fail
An ice maker is a small system: a water valve, a fill tube, a mold that freezes the cubes, and a motor that pushes them out. Trouble in any one of those stops the ice. Here's what we see most:
- No ice at all. A closed water supply, a frozen fill tube or a failed inlet valve.
- Small, hollow or clumped cubes. Low water flow, often from a clogged filter or valve screen.
- Ice stuck together in the bin. The freezer runs too warm, or the dispenser isn't used often.
- Water leaking under the fridge. A cracked line or a loose fitting.
- Ice maker runs but never dumps. A failed motor or a sensor problem.
Water, wells and ice makers
Much of the water around here comes from the Floridan Aquifer, and minerals can build up in the valve over time. Well sediment can clog the fine screen in the inlet valve and the fridge filter, and that slows the water to a trickle. Florida's health department advises well owners to test their water yearly.
If your home is on a well and the ice slowly got smaller, a clogged screen or filter is a good first guess.
Humidity and frozen fill tubes
Our humid air plays a part too. Whirlpool says humid room air builds moisture inside, especially when doors open often. That moisture can turn to frost near the ice maker and freeze the fill tube shut. Samsung lists a "33E" error for its ice pipe heater, the part that keeps that tube from freezing on some models.
Checks you can safely do
- Make sure the ice maker switch or arm is in the "on" position.
- Check that the water valve to the fridge is fully open.
- Replace the water filter if it's past due.
- Make sure the freezer door closes all the way.
- Look for ice jammed in the chute or bin.
If it still makes no ice after a day, call us. Please don't chip at ice near the fill tube with sharp tools, and unplug the fridge before you reach behind it.
After a storm outage
Power outages can leave a half-made batch frozen in the mold, or melt and refreeze ice in the bin. USDA notes that a full freezer holds its temperature for about 2 days if the door stays closed. Once power returns, toss any clumped ice and give the ice maker a full day to restart. Surges can also damage the ice maker module.
Fix the ice maker or replace it?
Valves, fill tube heaters, ice maker modules and filters are usually worth replacing. On some fridges, the whole ice maker unit swaps out as one part. If the fridge itself is not cooling well, we'll check that first. We give you an upfront quote, and we tell you the visit price on the phone before we come.
