If you smell gas, don't use switches or the oven. Leave the home and call the gas company or 911 from outside. If you see smoke, turn it off and switch off the breaker.
When the oven quits in Odessa
Ovens rarely fail all at once with no warning. More often, the bake time creeps up, the temperature drifts or one burner stops lighting. Then one day, it just won't heat.
We repair ovens and ranges all over Odessa. That includes basic electric ranges, gas ranges and dual-fuel models. If you have a pro-style range such as Wolf or Viking, we repair those too.
The usual suspects
Here are the most common problems:
- Oven won't heat. On electric models, a burned-out bake or broil element. On gas models, a weak igniter is a common cause.
- Temperature is off. A bad temperature sensor or a control that needs checking.
- Burner won't light or won't heat. A clogged gas burner port, a bad spark switch, or a failed electric element or switch.
- Clicking that won't stop. Moisture or spills near the spark igniters, or a stuck spark switch.
- Display or touch pad not working. A control board or keypad issue.
Humidity and ovens
Florida's damp air reaches the kitchen too. Moisture and boil-overs can find their way into the igniter area on gas ranges. That can cause a burner to click and click, or fail to light. Let a wet cooktop dry fully before using it. If the clicking doesn't stop once things are dry, we'll check the spark switch and wiring.
Storm outages and electric controls
Most ranges today have an electronic control, even gas ones. After a hurricane season outage, the power surge on restart can damage that board. UF/IFAS suggests surge protectors or unplugging items you don't need during storms. If your oven shows a blank or scrambled display after power returns, switch the breaker off for a minute, then back on. If it still won't work, call us.
Safe steps to try
For electric ranges, switch off the breaker first. For gas, never take apart gas parts.
- Check the breaker. Electric ranges use a double breaker.
- Make sure the clock is set. On some models, the oven won't start until it is.
- Check if the oven lock or Sabbath mode is turned on.
- On a gas range, see if the stovetop burners light. If they do, the gas supply is on.
- Look at the bake element through the window. Breaks or blisters mean it has failed.
Holiday crowds and big meals
Holiday meals mean long hours at high heat, sometimes with the self-clean cycle run right before. Self-clean gets very hot, and it can be the last straw for a tired fuse or control. If company is coming, run a test bake a few days ahead rather than self-cleaning the morning of.
Repair or buy new?
Elements, igniters, sensors and switches are common repairs and usually make sense. High-end ranges from Wolf, Viking or KitchenAid are almost always worth fixing. If an older basic range needs a control board plus other major parts, replacing it may be the smarter choice. You'll get an upfront quote either way, and you decide.
